NEC Hydrastor – expecting a storage revolution in six months

NEC Corporation, according to the source, is going to make a revolution in the field of data storage in the next six months – we are talking about developing a distributed system that has better scalability and provides better data safety even in the event of failures or failures of individual nodes.

The NEC platform was named Hydrastor – apparently from the word “hydra”, meaning a creature calmly experiencing the loss of part of its limbs. A source referring to the official representatives of the Japanese company claims that NEC is already at the stage of testing its system.

Hydrastor is powered by DynamicStor software, which allows you to build a cluster of standard servers on x86-compatible processors. However, the user will not “see” individual server nodes, but one large drive.

As an answer to a logical question – how is the new system fundamentally different from RAID??, The NEC spokesman made three arguments:

  • System management is different from RAID disk management. In particular, it is possible to connect or disconnect individual servers from the system for preventive or repair work without stopping the applications working with them. To do this, DynamicStor launches (in the background) the processes of transferring data from servers preparing for disconnection to running or newly connected systems. Once these processes are complete, the servers can be disconnected from the system.
  • Minimizing data redundancy stored in corporate storage centers. For example, if a user has changed just one slide in a PowerPoint presentation that he resent to his colleagues, then both the old and the new version of the file are saved in the system. DynamicStor, according to its creators, tracks changes in such files and stores only updated data.
  • Improved “survivability” of the system: DynamicStor reserves 25% of disk space, which allows you to survive the failure of up to three servers at the same time. As a comparison with RAID, the source cites the following data: 20% of the reserved disk space allows a RAID system to survive painlessly the failure of one drive included in its composition.

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of a distributed storage system will be about $ 1 per gigabyte. Source reports that Hydrastor has shown interest in the US Federal Reserve. This, as well as the good recommendations of IDC, could serve as a good advertisement for the new system, as well as for the corporation as a whole – NEC is going through rather difficult times and last month was excluded from the list of firms for which the NASDAQ market index is compiled.
