In the matter of increasing the density of data storage on optical media, Israeli developers again distinguished themselves. We will remind, ten months ago, information was received that the Israeli company Matteris is creating a new optical media and a device for working with it. This time, Mempile specialists who have created TeraDisc technology promise to record the same volume on a 12 cm disc. According to the published press release, they recently demonstrated the concept of a new medium to several Japanese consumer electronics manufacturers by recording and reading information from “virtual layers” located on an optical disc.
The capacity of the new disk is currently estimated at 500 GB, which is already more than double the amount outlined in the plans for the development of technology using “blue lasers” for 2021.
Existing media uses reflective, translucent materials. This allows you to build up volumes by creating multi-layer discs, but the number of layers is very limited. Partial reflection from inner layers attenuates the signal while increasing noise and coherent interference.
Mempile technology uses a different approach, which is called “volumetric recording” – it allows you to record information in the entire thickness of the disk, on the so-called “virtual layers”. The company claims to have already demonstrated work with more than a hundred layers – which equates to just under 300GB for a drive with a 0.6mm active layer. By increasing the thickness of the active layer to 1.2 mm, Mempile hopes to record and read at least 500 GB of information. Further improvements are expected to bring the storage capacity up to 1 TB.
According to unconfirmed reports, the appearance of a corresponding commercial product on the market can be expected within 12-18 months.
