Turn off the protected view in Word then try to open these files and check how it works. Also try to open files from SkyDrive within Word application and check how it works.

You may refer to the article below on how to Work together on Office documents in SkyDrive:. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. What happens when you try to open the document? Does the issue occurs with specific document? Are you unable to work with the document if the protected view is turned off?

We would require complete information which will help us to analyze and assist you in better way. So I had the same issue downloading from a client’s cloud sharepoint.

I turned off the protection and am now able to download and open because I trust this source. That is scary and doesn’t seem safe. This problem has just started in the last week. I never had this issue before and don’t know what could have changed to make it not open in protected view. Recently, I too have been facing the issue of not being able to open downloaded files in Word on my PC. It would keep displaying “Opening in Protected View” but wouldn’t open at all. Noteworthy here is that, this issue shows up only while logged in through the Standard non-admin user accounts.

With the Admin user account, it works perfectly fine. Files created locally on the PC do not have this issue though with any user account. I have tried granting “full control” rights for MS Office to each individual user account on the PC but the issue remains. Interestingly, for every word document downloaded from the internet, under the “General” tab in “Properties” window, I could find an “Unblock” button. Clicking this would disable the “Protected View” for that particular file and then open it normally.

But I don’t want to risk the security by unblocking every file before opening. Try turning off all options that refer to Protected view. Of course, after having done so, since File Block Settings and Protected View are security settings, you should be careful before opening documents from unknown senders.

I am enrolled in courses that use online resources like Moodle similar to Blackboard and my instructors upload documents for us to view and download. I recently purchased Office and although I can open a blank document in word if I try to open any document from moodle, MS Words’ loading screen opens up and states “opening in protected view” but doesn’t do anything else.

Do I need to change MS office settings, my computer settings, or what? I can open the documents off of moodle from any other computer using other versions of MS office. This thread is locked. Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to Nayana S M’s post on September 24, Thank you! This worked for me and now I am able to view school documents.

I was at a loss until I found this post. If I just turned off protected view to open a document that I was having trouble with before, do we need to have protected view on at all?

In reply to A. User’s post on January 30, Hello, 1. In reply to Nayana S M’s post on January 30, Hi I’m having a few issues with Office I have Office Professional Plus Pretty sure I just did a full standard installation.

Below is the list of the problems I am having with Office Outlook says there is no reading view previewer installed to preview any Word documents. I’m guessing this is the same for Excel documents too. However, the reading pane previewer will work for. I have turned off protected view in Word and Excel.

I double click on the Word document. Word says it did not open properly last time, do I want to open the document in safe mode? I click no, then Word gives me an error message “Word has stopped working However, other documents, like. I save the document to the computer. Go to the saved location and double click on the document. Returns error message “There was problem sending the command to the program” click ok.

Eventually it asks again do I want to open the document in safe mode? I click No, then the document opens. I tried opening an Excel document directly from Outlook and have had exactly the same problem as with Word and can only open the excel document after turning off protected view and from a saved location.

I download a Word or Excel document direct from the Internet using Firefox then try and open the document through Firefox. Nothing will open, no error message or anything. Only way to open the document is to go to the saved location. Even then, I might still have the same issues opening the document as stated above.

Eventually, after all that mucking around, opening the documents directly from the saved location result in the documents opening as normal, without any errors or crashes. Is ok to have this feature turned off? With all these issues, I am considering just returning back to Office I have not yet uninstalled Office , so I’m not sure if there are any conflicts happening.

I would think that there is any conflicts that an error message would appear saying so. You are awesome! It worked!! In reply to tamarabentzur’s post on March 15, Another thing that you can do, is leave the Protected View turned on and then when you download a document that you trust, save it to the local drive and then right click on it and select Properties and then click on the Unblock button.
