BenQ leaves the DVD recorder market

Taiwan-based BenQ has announced the discontinuation of production and sale of DVD-compatible optical recording devices.

The company’s sales in this segment were decreasing. After many manufacturers had to significantly reduce the prices of their products due to competition, such production ceased to bring the profit that Benq expected from it. The company is currently considering options to market with new products that support Blu-ray or HD DVD formats.

Recall that not so long ago, Plextor announced a significant decrease in the volume of development and production in this segment. It looks like in the near future only a few of the largest companies such as Samsung and LG will produce DVD recorders. The rest, given such a low profit margin, will have nothing to do on the market, and they will focus on supporting more promising formats, where competition is still lower.
