I think your first thought was correct. Window Defender bundled with windows is up to the task and able to be trusted IMO. Not avast. Twice now it’s been the cause of my computer throwing the error “start and cortana could not start” and I’ve had to boot into safe mode to stop it. A reinstall from scratch might fix it but I cbf.
