Intel Visual Computing Group: project news
Recently, information has appeared bit by bit about the Visual Computing Group project, created by Intel, presumably in order to enter the market of powerful discrete accelerators.
Thanks to Beyond3D, we can announce that Douglas M has been appointed head of VCG. Carmine, formerly one of the key engineers behind the Pentium 4 architecture.
Another significant point regarding the group is that Intel removed from its page on its website mentions of discrete graphics cards. Now the goal of VCG is to develop “cutting edge products”. In general, the goals of the group now look more like creating software products, in particular, a development kit (SDK), designed to “spark the industry”. The ultimate goal of the project is to implement ray tracing in real time. This should give a fundamentally different level of quality of the resulting image compared to the rasterization used by today’s video cards to create a three-dimensional scene. Ray tracing is used to create cartoons by Dreamworks and Pixar.
Interesting comments from Intel experts on the future of ray tracing. They are all unanimous in their opinion that this is the only way to photorealistic graphics. To do this, according to Jerry Bautista, director of the company’s research laboratory, the calculations will have to be shifted from GPU to CPU. The time frame for the creation of such solutions is a period from 3 to 5 years. Pat Gelsinger, executive vice president of Intel Digital Enterprise Group echoes Bautista, saying the idea is very interesting for the Tera-Scale initiative. Such processors, by the way, should appear in about the same 3-5 years.
