National Semiconductor has figured out how to extend cable connections up to 400 m
National Semiconductor Unveils Chipset to Extend Cable Length. According to the company, the chipset has the lowest power consumption among similar products – 360 mW, while the communication range can reach 400 m. The microcircuits are designed to transmit LVDS (low-voltage differential signaling), LVPECL (low voltage positive emitter coupled logic) and CML (current-mode logic) signals over copper wires (CAT5 or higher or coaxial) at a rate of 0.15-1.5 Gbps. For comparison, usually the transmission range of such signals is limited to 20 meters.
Includes DS15BA101 ($ 4) and DS15EA101 ($ 8.75). They are manufactured according to National’s proprietary technology, based on the BiCMOS-8 SiGe process technology.
The DS15BA101 differential buffer chip is available in a 3 x 3 mm package. It can be used alone or paired with the adaptive equalizer DS15EA101, which is available in a 4 x 4 mm housing and allows you to automatically adjust the signal parameters for a specific cable. Equalizer DS15EA101 works with unipolar or differential signal, making it suitable for connection to coaxial cables and twisted pairs. Both microcircuits are designed to be powered from a single 3.3V source.
