Cortex-M1: ARM microprocessor core specifically for FPGA
And one more message regarding programmable gate arrays (FPGA) – this time from ARM. World renowned microprocessor core maker Announces Availability of Cortex-M1 Processor Core – Optimized for FPGA Use. Cortex-M1 is aimed at OEMs who can unify the architecture of their solutions. Actel became the first holder of a license for Cortex-M1 to take part in the development of the core.
ARM and Actel are expected to demonstrate the Cortex-M1 at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose April 2-5. Actel plans to provide Cortex-M1 as part of its Fusion (Programmable System Chips) and FPGA ProASIC3 products at no additional license fee.
As for the processor itself, the press release states that the ARM Cortex-M1 is a 32-bit RISC processor with a three-stage pipeline using a slightly modified Thumb-2 instruction set. The microprocessor core is said to be able to execute Thumb code, thus being software compatible with ARM7TDMI and older. The Cortex-M1 can operate at frequencies over 170 MHz, delivering 0.8 DMIPS (Million. instructions per second) / MHz.
