Kaspersky Lab Virus Activity Review – March 2021

Kaspersky Lab presents an overview of virus activity in March, based on the results of analysis of mail traffic.

In three months of 2021, three leaders of the monthly viral twenty have already changed. Every month, wave after wave of new malicious programs replace each other in reports, and many of them are clearly competing with each other.

The new leader of the March ranking is Trojan-Spy.Html.Bankfraud.ra – is a consequence of viral epidemics of the recent past. After all, it is nothing more than a typical phishing email sent out in millions of copies all over the world, and we have noted multiple mailings of this Trojan.

The viral world continues to fever. In three months of 2021, three leaders of the monthly viral twenty have already changed. Every month, wave after wave of new malicious programs replace each other in our reports, and many of them are clearly competing with each other.

Let’s recall a little the chronology of events in recent months. The end of last year was marked by the worms of the Warezov family. Hundreds of variants of this worm have flooded the Internet for three months, and it seemed that this will continue for a long time. However, in January, the worms of the Bagle family unexpectedly returned from oblivion, and one of them became the most widespread malicious code in email. February was the peak of the epidemic of several variants of the new Zhelatin worm. Six of these worms appeared in our past hit parade. All of the aforementioned worms, in their essence, were aimed at the same thing – sending spam through infected computers. This has affected the volume of spam in mail traffic in recent months: an increase in the amount of spam was noted by almost all antivirus companies.

It was first discovered on February 27, 2021, and in one month it was able to reach a very solid figure in more than 30% of the total number of malware detected in mail traffic.

The Trojan targets Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB&T) clients and lures them to fake websites registered by cybercriminals in Croatia and the Cocos Islands.

Among other viruses, Bagle should be noted in the top five.gt, which was able to maintain its last month’s percentages and in the event of Bankfraud disappearing in April.ra may come first again. Netsky Worm Metrics.t and Netsky.q changed as follows: the first one halved its presence in traffic, the second doubled this indicator. And, of course, the authors of Warezov do not give up – in March their most “successful” creation was Warezov.jx reaching fifth place.

There are no other newcomers in the March ranking, but the tendency of returning to the top twenty of old malicious programs that has already left our reports continues. In February, there were four such “returnees”, and two of them not only survived until March, but also increased their indicators (Scano.gen and Netsky.b).

March returned six more viruses to reports, including such veterans of the virus war as Feebs.gen, Mydoom.m and Warezov.do. Note that all such “returns” are directly related to possible infections of users who either do not use anti-virus programs or have not updated them for several months. All this leads to repeated mass mailings of old and seemingly long-defeated worms.

March results

  • Two new malicious and potentially dangerous programs have appeared in the top twenty: Trojan-Spy.Html.Bankfraud.ra, Email-Worm.Win32.Warezov.jx
  • Improved their performance: Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.q, Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.aa, Email-Worm.Win32.Scano.gen, Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.b, Exploit.Win32.IMG-WMF.y, Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.gen
  • Lowered their metrics: Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.gt, Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.t, Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.dam, Packed.Win32.PePatch.gr
  • Back in the top twenty: Email-Worm.Win32.Mydoom.l, Worm.Win32.Feebs.gen, Email-Worm.Win32.Warezov.do, Email-Worm.Win32.NetSky.x, Email-Worm.Win32.Mydoom.m, Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.bt, Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.dam
  • Has not changed its position Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.c
