Facing Difficulty Acquiring 50nm Norms, Samsung Goes To Raise NAND Prices
The slight increase in the price of NAND flash seen by observers is due to increased orders from Apple, according to the source. Most of them went to Toshiba, since Samsung Electronics is having difficulties with the transition to the 50nm process technology.
Toshiba and Samsung currently have very limited NAND supplies. At the beginning of the year, the first Samsung products launched at 50 nm standards appeared on the market. They were 16 Gigabit MLC NAND chips. Allegedly, the transition to more subtle standards (previously used 70-nm process technology) reduced the percentage of product yield, creating a kind of “stranded” that the company has to overcome.
Samsung’s previously released plans for 8-Gbps and 16-Gbps MLC NAND chips were slated for Q2, so by and large there is no cause for concern.
The reserve for increasing the production of flash memory is the transfer of a part of the capacities currently occupied for the production of DRAM chips. Since such a transfer was launched by Samsung in December last year, and the effect of this measure will affect in two to three months, the situation may soon stabilize, industry observers believe.
In the meantime, the expected shortage of NAND chips suggests that Samsung and Hynix will raise prices for this type of product starting in April.
In addition, Samsung Electronics reportedly simultaneously begins to restrict the supply of Secure Digital (SD) and microSD cards to other companies selling them under its own brands.
